Fostering Gender Equality in Classrooms across Latin America

The Great Latin American Women project is a collaboration with Argentine children’s magazine Billiken to co-create and transform the future and legacy of a magazine that has been at the heart of Argentine cultural life for over 100 years. Through its innovative focus on women in all their diversity, the partnership resulted in Billiken adopting more inclusive narratives, investing in digital innovation, and reconnecting with the education profession.

The Story of Billiken

In a continuation of the project in response to feedback from teachers in the region, the team jointly developed the open access online platform, grandesmujeres.lat with educators in Guatemala. The platform offers over 400 classroom resources that showcase the contributions made by historical and contemporary women to societies across Latin America. To help educators get the most from the resources, a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with the title ‘How to foster gender equality in the classroom’ was developed. The MOOC offers simple strategies for introducing the topic into lessons, along with theoretical background that teachers can draw on to explain what they are doing and why.

This film explains how the MOOC came into being, how it is being used by teachers and the impact it is having in the classroom and beyond.
